Wells Buddhist Meditation Group

Insight Meditation Sitting Group (Sangha) in Wells.

Please note – no meeting on  2nd or 9th  January  2012.

We meet weekly on a Monday evening at a location in central Wells. We are affiliated to Gaia House  (www.gaiahouse.co.uk) Meditation Retreat Centre and offer the opportunity for those who’ve attended retreats there to continue their practice with a local sangha. However, you don’t need to have completed a retreat in order to attend. If you’d like to join the group, please call 01749 674842 and ask to speak with Steve or Sally.

Our Aims:

  • To provide a peaceful, supportive space for those who would like to sit together.
  • To provide the opportunity to share experiences, views and short dharma talks on Buddhism and its application to everyday life.

What is Insight Meditation?

Insight meditation is “the practice of developing a calm and mindful investigation into the nature of experience, leading to wisdom, compassion and the end of suffering, through awakening to the four noble truths” according to the Gaia House website. It is also known as “vipassana.”

We begin by meditating in silence, focusing on the breath. We provide a few chairs and some Yoga mats. Please bring your own zafu, cushion or meditation stool – whatever you would normally use.

For those who already attend the group.

Steve and I will be here each Monday evening and we’d like to invite you to join us when you can.

Arrivals: Between 7:15 and 7:30pm. After 7:30pm we will not answer the front door as sitting will have begun.

Short sit: 7:30pm-7:45pm

Discussion or short dharma talk: 7:45pm – 8:10pm

Longer sit: 8:10 – 8:55pm

8:55-9:00pm – depart.

There is no charge, although we do welcome small donations (dana) towards the cost of heating (logs) and lighting (candles) during the colder months.

If, for any reason, we will not be sitting, we’ll post a message here. So, please check this page each week just before you come along.
